I feel like I've seen dango like that though, it might be more common than you think.

Really? I’m not the expert on dangos, but when you look at the plates, some of the dangos are clean/whole, while some look like they have bean paste leaking out so I just assumed those were the result of Hiyori’s mom’s terrible kitchen skills. ^^;

It looked like bean paste and I'm sure that gets used as a topping.

Oh, that's new to me then, because in my country red bean paste is always used as a stuffing, and rarely if ever used as topping.

They don't usually put stuffing inside Dango (rice dumpling), though. They either coat them with either sauce or bean paste. The one that has stuffing are Daifuku.
